The Annual General Meeting of the Orkney Heritage Society will be held at the St Magnus Centre, Kirkwall, at 7pm on 16th November 2023.

The meeting will be followed by a talk by John Leith: Letters from Below Decks.

In the late 18th / early 19th centuries the Leith brothers went to sea. They sent and received letters, many of which still exist. John Leith talks about what he has found so far researching these letters and some of the questions raised for further research.

DRAFT 2022 AGM Minute

OHS AGM St Magnus Centre, Kirkwall, 17 November 2022, 7.30pm

Another year has gone by and we are rapidly approaching the OHS AGM, which this year can be held in person in the St Magnus Centre at 7.30pm on Thursday 17th November 2022.

Following the conclusion of business, Dr Andrew Lind will give a talk entitled,Royalists, Rebels & Clubmen: Orkney and the Carbisdale Campaign, 1649-50.’  This is a much-anticipated talk, which will cover a poorly understood part of Orkney history.

For those that cannot attend in person, you can join online. To receive a link for the meeting via Eventbrite please use this link:

https://www.eventbrite.com/e/457226957137

You will then receive an email in which there will be a link to attend the meeting. This allows us to collect e-mail addresses and so confirm which attendees of the meeting are members.

The 2022 AGM Agenda and supporting papers can be accessed on the OHS website here: https://orkneyheritagesociety.org.uk/membership/members-resources/

This year the Society has made a big saving in sending out PDF copies of the Newsletter, but we are concerned that some members may not have received their copy if the email to which it was attached went into their junk or spam folders.  Please do check and get in touch if you still have not received your copy of the 2022 Newsletter (email chair@orkneyheritagesociety.org.uk).

Also, there are still seven unclaimed pre-ordered copies of HMS Hampshire, a Century of Myths and Mysteries Unravelled.  Please get in touch if you have an order form or know of anyone that has one.  Otherwise, the books will go back into stock.

The AGM provides an opportunity for members to get together to exchange ideas for future activities of the Society.   As ever there is an opportunity to get involved and we are always keen to welcome new board members.
Normally, meetings are held every six weeks on an evening in Kirkwall and last for up to two hours.   Please email chair@orkneyheritagesociety.org.uk or secretary@orkneyheritagesociety.org.uk if you would like more information.

OHS AGM Thursday 18th November 2021 – Online event

OHS AGM Thursday 18th November 2021 7pm

and talk by Lynn Campbell: Orkney’s Other HalfThe Role of Women in Orkney History

Despite the global Covid-19 pandemic crisis, Orkney Heritage Society has had another busy year and there is much to hear about and celebrate.  The AGM provides an opportunity for members to get together to exchange ideas for future activities of the Society.

Due to concerns about recent increases in cases of Covid-19 in Orkney, this year the AGM will be held online at 7.00pm on Thursday 18th November 2021, on the Zoom platform.

To receive a link for the meeting please go to Eventbrite by clicking on this link:
https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/orkney-heritage-society-agm-tickets-202075582507

This allows us to collect e-mail addresses and so confirm which attendees of the meeting are members.

The agenda for the meeting can be found on our Resources Page, where you will also find the minutes from the 2020 AGM, financial reports and other relevant documents.

Over the last three years, the Society has published bumper editions of its Newsletter.  Unfortunately, this is expensive and we need to look at ways of reducing our cost.  An easy and green solution would be to distribute an electronic PDF version.   For those still wanting a hard copy, would members be happy with a £5 contribution for postage and printing?  We are keen to have feedback from members on this.

As ever there is an opportunity to get involved and this year there are again vacancies on the Board of Trustees.  We are therefore looking forward to welcoming new members to the Board and would hope you will consider standing. Normally, meetings are held every six weeks on an evening in Kirkwall and last for about 2 hours.  This year our meetings have been online, but are now beginning to meet again in person.

Please email chair@orkneyheritagesociety.org.uk or secretary@orkneyheritagesociety.org.uk if you would like more information.

Following the conclusion of business, Lynn Campbell will give a short talk on the role of women in Orkney history: Orkney’s Other Half – Women in Orkney”.

We look forward to seeing you,

Yours sincerely

Neil Kermode
