50th Anniversary of the Orkney County Council Act: A Talk by Howie Firth

50th Anniversary of the Orkney County Council Act:   A Talk by Howie Firth
Monday 26th February 2024 7.30pm
St Magnus Centre Friends’ Room
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the passing of the Orkney County Council Act which, along with its counterpart in Shetland, allowed the islands to control oil developments, and provided environmental protection and economic benefits which continue today. Working in the local media in the late 1970s, Howie met the people behind the drawing up of this important and farsighted piece of legislation and heard about the thinking behind it. With Orkney on the cusp of major renewable energy developments both onshore and offshore, are there lessons to be learnt for today from the 1974 Act?

Free entry, but numbers limited. Please reserve your place via Eventbrite at the link below. Donations to OHS welcome on the night!

OHS AGM and talk by John Leith: Letters from Below Decks

The Annual General Meeting of the Orkney Heritage Society will be held at the St Magnus Centre, Kirkwall, at 7pm on 16th November 2023.

The meeting will be followed by a talk by John Leith: Letters from Below Decks.

In the late 18th / early 19th centuries the Leith brothers went to sea. They sent and received letters, many of which still exist. John Leith talks about what he has found so far researching these letters and some of the questions raised for further research.
